His plays have been produced across Canada and the U.S. and around the world. Like his generation of Canadian playwrights, John is self-taught, and took some years to figure out how to put together a play that really affects the audience. Workshop Description: There are only two things without which theatre cannot exist – actor and audience. That means as a director, I am expendable. No matter how much research I do, how deep my thematic insights, or how broad my artistic vision, if I cannot inspire the actors to make the production their own, I have failed. My job is to help actors do their job.
In this workshop, we will look at the director’s tasks through this lens, aiming to keep the student actors’ experience at the forefront of the process. Participants are encouraged to bring their questions and case studies to the table and to engage in the conversation.
